What is really true? Philosophers love to debate that question. The rest of us tend to avoid it. But privately, we can’t. It’s the question that pops up when we’re alone and trying to be honest with ourselves.
We tend to act on what we want to believe is true, rather than what we really believe down deep. Of course we get lots of help with this little mind game. In fact, it’s fair to say that for every important truth in life, there’s a lie that sounds very similar, but leads to a very different conclusion.
So, what’s true to you?…

Truth is whatever you want it to be. It’s like my shirt. Today it’s white, tomorrow it’s black. Truth always has to be updated, needs to stay current. Once upon a time, truth was very narrow-minded. I’m so glad I live in today’s world!!!!!

So truth changes??????
October 12, 2007 at 1:31 pm |
Rod,
Yes. The greater understanding we have, the more we realize we have to change. Take the medical field, they use to think draining a few pints of someone’s blood would heal them. Today, we realize that was way off. Truth is an evolving process.

Bruce,
The fact that we believe something to be true doesnt make it true. We might learn more about what truth is as we go along, but that doesnt change the fact that the truth was there all the time.
To use your analogy, bloodletting was never a cure all, society just believed that it was…..but it didnt make it true.
John 8:32 says “you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
October 12, 2007 at 3:16 pm |
What does it matter what’s true to me? Everyone’s gonna have a different opinion.
A better question would be to ask who(m) or what determines what is true.
Is it society?
The majority of a population?
The Government?
God?
October 12, 2007 at 10:17 pm |
I think truth is bigger than anything and anybody and all people and religions have a little bit of truth in them. We should all go and pick up bits of truth of all religions and gather as much we can so we end up with the truth that works for us.
October 13, 2007 at 12:25 am |
Vinny,
Wouldn’t your idea end up with an “everyone is right, nobody’s wrong” mentality?
Does that really work?
October 13, 2007 at 12:56 am |
(Everybody is right, nobody’s wrong) -Maybe, maybe not. Notice that I wrote that I would end up with the truth that *works* for me. I am not sure if the rest are right or wrong and to be honest I feel good when I “think” or “know” am right – even if I realize later I was wrong. Hear me now, don’t you remember when you were sure you were right about something and when you realized you were wrong you moved on, learned from it and then remember that experience just as that, an experience? Again, when you ask if this works I’d say yes to that, as I explained above it works for me.
Truth is an interesting topic. That is why I am spending some of my time here. Learning from others is my thing. I want to know more about this topic. Thank you.

Mike hit something, what determines truth? I remember my grandmother Jenny, God rest her soul, she would always say, “You (kids) better play nice. Society. We all need to play nice & function as a society. This world is a screwed up place & if we don’t do something, our kids are going to suffer. Time to rewrite the rules & learn to play nice.
October 13, 2007 at 2:10 am |
Vinny,
I read your post again. I agree with it as long as it benefits the whole, while it benefits you. As you said in your last comment, “Learning from others” is important too. We need to be open minded. The day you shut the door is the day you die.

Bruce,
It needs to benefit others and not just you, that is precisely right. Our societies are mined with selfish individuals that don’t care about others. All of us must do an effort because our nature cries for “it is all about me” everyday. Ac couple of hours ago I was at a 24-hour store to buy a cold tea after my workout. An older lady was in front of me with a heavy pack of bottled-water and she was trying to lift it up out of the cart to put it on the counter so the cashier would scan it. I was just watching (for few seconds) the big guy behind me, the young lady in front of me, and the other lady in front of the old one, they all saw this but did not do anything… Of course, I stepped in and carried the heavy pack out and in the cart… What were those people thinking about? Dinner?, Discovery Channel?, sports? It appears that as the years go by people get worse. It makes me wonder, how is it going to be 20 years from now? Something must happen. Something radical must wake us up otherwise it does not look pretty.

According to http://www.Dictionary.com “true” means-”real; genuine; authentic”.
True is what is, and will be. Something you can prove without going into a big debate about. For example, this keyboard I am typing on…this is real, this is true….the screen I am looking at, is real and true…noone can argue that this is not a keyboard…its the truth, it is what it is.
Love…is it really true? Can you prove it? Or just say it with a sweet voice and a hallmark card??? Now dont get me wrong, I do believe true love exists, but just like all of us, I cant really prove that its real….at least not as real as this keyboard in front of me. Feel me?

Love is true, love is not a felling, it’s a no limits commentment (contract) to one another, that means I will stand by you no matter what you do or don’t do. Because we are finite beings, that love for one another ends at death, but the love (truth) between GOD and us still remains. The love of GOD doesn’t end even if you chose not to believe in HIM, you maybe out of his presents but he is not out of yours. My emotions may tell me your not doing the right thing but the truth (love) between us is still there.

I know what love is. Please do this.
If you have a Bible and read it you may know what I’m talking about. For those who have one but don’t read it look up 1 Corinthians 13:4-13 but especially verses 4-8. And if you don’t have a Bible, please look it up at a book store.
I have read many self-help books and books on love and pondered on my own versions of what love is. When I read this for the first time I put away every other book or writing or philosophy and adopted this.
(Don’t get me on a high-and-mighty kick cause I certainly fail all the time.)
When I first read that passage in 1 Corinthians 13, I thought to myself “we have libraries full of books that try to explain love, and the Bible explains it in a matter of 9 verses!” AMAZING!!
TRUE!!!

Truth is: if you jump off of a building, you will get hurt.
Love is: telling the person who think they wont get hurt if they jump off of the building to not do it.
Truth is: many people are confused about what truth really is.
Love is: someone taking the time to find the truth and reveal it to the confused.
Truth is: one day every person that reads this will die, eventually.
Love is: Jesus gave his life for every person that reads this so they can live. (John 3:16)

Can someone prove that we all see the color green like the others? Feel love, hate, even depression in the same way? It’s all about your “Reality”. Your reality is made up of all the ingredients of your life experiences. So how can my truth be your truth? My truth lies in my heart; in abstract thought processes and feelings but most of all in “Perception”. One can debate till the end of time about this and never will everyone agree. How sure are you about death, heaven, hell…or God? We compile bits n pieces to form our opinions but nobody has the same bits or pieces….and on and on.
November 7, 2007 at 7:21 am |
Physical truths -If you get dropped off a building you fall – truth – if you have a hanglider you fall slower – truth – 1st law of thermodynamics matter can’t be created or destroyed – truth – if you run real fast at a brick wall it will hurt bad! – truth these don’t change these things are true no matter what you think or believe or how many times you change your shirt (hopefully many times) –
Spritual truths – we are all sinners – we all do things wrong that hurt people as well as God – truth (can you bruce say your perfect??) truth – No matter how hard you try sooner or later your going to mess up – truth – man what your takling about is beliefs or errors not truth if it changes it’s not truth – God however is the same yesterday, today, and forever – Truth
November 7, 2007 at 7:27 am |
Vinny – truth works for everyone or it’s not truth it’s a plan, it’s an idea, it’s a preception? – Truth is truth it works if it’s true for everyone – or it hurts – if true everyone – “I am the way (the only way), The truth (true for everyone and everything), and the life (the only way to a real fulfilling life – mainy becase your’e living in truth) ” – Jesus – what you think is right may not be for instance true story: a 12 yr old boy riding in his dad’s train – the train crashes there is a great loss of life – the 12 yr old boy is thrown from the train and lands safely – (good or bad) – the boy was Adolph Hitler – see you don’t and can’t know whats “good for you or any one else” apart from God who knows “the end from the beginning and from ancient times what was unseen”
November 7, 2007 at 11:27 am |
Tink – whether or not we see green – is preceptions – especially if you’re color blind- again not truth – truth is true all the time – the fact that there is a shirt – truth – the fact that you’re viewing the shirt is true – if there is no truth and only preception what if someone believes or precieves a certian group of people to be sub-human and sets out to kill them all – so you’re saying that’s true and right if he precieves it to be???? There is a truth and there is error and truth is true whether or not you believe it or even precieve it – it’s true that there is oxygen that you breathe whether you believe it or not – cease to inhale because you don’t believe it and you die – same with God’s truth it’s true there’s a consequence for sin – and that there is a cure (Jesus) and whether you believe it or not you will still have to face it
November 7, 2007 at 12:43 pm |
God is the truth & the only way to find out He is the truth for yourself is to ask God to reveal Himself to you in all sincerity of heart & He will do so. Then start reading His Word…the Bible & He will truly reveal all He is to you one revelation at a time. God is AWESOME & AMAZING & He just wants us to want to know Him & have a relationship with Him…When you know HIM, you will know TRUTH!!!
November 7, 2007 at 7:24 pm |
I believe in one truth and that is Jesus Christ the Word made flesh. He said, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life, no one comes to the Father except by me”. 10 years ago I would not have said this until I found the truth and it was faith in Christ. That was in 1998 and nothing has been the same since.
November 8, 2007 at 10:08 am |
Jesus says in his word the He is the truth, all other truths are world truths
for you see our lives are to live for Jesus not the way the world would have us to live them or the way we think truth should be, Jesus is the only way to have eternal life,
November 8, 2007 at 10:39 am |
Truth is not a feeling nor a thought. It is a real whether we have arrived there or not. When people believed the world was flat, it was that way until it was proven differently. The truth is the the world is round, that did not change because we believed it to be flat.
just because you do not believe in God, does not mean He is not real. It is only your place in line that holds you where you are. If you examine the facts and come up with the fact that there is no God, it only means you have not looked with an open heart. In statistics, it is known that you can sway any evaluation if you go into the process with a PREconceived notion. You will find stats that support your notion. But, is that the truth, or a planned outcome?
we find truth when we seek outside the box the world has sold us. example: kids today in the public schools are taught the Big Bang therory along with the evolutionary tale, because it serves the lack of God therory better. But, the truth is that the man who came up with the Big Bang therory does not believe it and was ousted from the scientific community when he came out against it.
The best test of truth is; does it stand the test of time?

Children do come with a handbook (it’s called the Bible) …. and you’re the child …. read it …. learn it …. apply it …. and make a difference …. one child at a time

The Bible is the only book that presents man as he truly is and the only book that gives lasting and true answers as to how to deal with these problems. The Bible is the only book the presents a God who is above our knowing and understanding – and the only book that shows the utter futility of trying to do anything to earn his favor – and it’s the only book that shows a God who knowing these things still loved us enough to provide a way through to him
November 15, 2007 at 1:37 pm |
well said albert, it is also the only book that proclaims itself to be itself because of itself. The Bible didn’t make God, God made the Bible.
I Am who I Am.
The Word was with God and the Word was God.

After searching my whole life through for what is true,
And waxing philosophical as so many tend to do…
What I finally found, because He drew me –
Is Jesus Christ, my Savior, and today I’m free.
The Bible alone in its entirety is true.
When you come to understand this by Grace…
you will have found Truth, too.
As a “true” believer, what I suggest: Get off the intellectual train, wait for the Love train, get on board because Jesus is the Head Engineer, and only He knows the way to steer us to Heaven. Is there any other destination worth considering?
January 22, 2008 at 11:25 am |
We live in a time where so many are searching for truth. We also we live in a time where anyone can publish a book, get on a talk show, even give his or her opinion in a Blog. This can be good or bad I guess. Only 100 years ago we had to rely on our ancestors, our loved ones and a few books to get our “truths”. Now every day a new prophet of “truth” comes out with a self help book or cd or Tv special. What I believe is unfortunate is that most of the so called wisdom tells us to look within ourselves for the answers. You are powerfull on your own. You can change your world. What you feel or imagine, you will be. Conversely, The greatest self help book in history tells us, that what we are and the gifts that we have been given, come only by grace from our God. To make the most out of ourselves and to use our gifts wisely we need to look outside of ourselves, to the Holy Spirit, who waits to make us as complete as we were designed to be, giving ourselves and our gifts to God in his name, Jesus Christ. As Christians, our truth is that God has come to us in Love. And no matter what we do in this world or what we become, we can not reach him on our own.
January 23, 2008 at 4:28 am |
After reading a lot of these posts. It really hits home, That we really think a lot of ourselves. As Bob says I am always on my mind.
This mentality–without the knowledge of realizing it–is an issue. Is very sad to see us think of ourselves so highly. Without God there is no truth
and God is God wheather you belive it or not. God will stay God no matter what you or I think. The fact that 10 out of ten people Die will make you ask the question “What if God is God and I am wrong?”
What plan do you have that could be better than His.
Surrounded By Mercy, Protected By Prayer

Truth, is what has been written. Anyone can test the word of God to there lives. It is infallible. When someone says “what is true to you”, That question to me is from Society, Secularism. Facts of Science is different. We were born to explore, it would be a boring world if we didn’t, but our Scientiest often have agendas. Usually it’s financial or recognition. Only inventors and scientist with no agenda have made true history. The truth never changes, majority of the people often stear or views. Look at our times we had prayer in school, abortion was illegal divorce was rare. In time people decided to leave truth of commitment to family and Country, respect for life, dignity of hard work, and fear of God. We abanoned ourselves to suit temporary desires and called it “being true to ourselves”. Let me say, I am no hypocrite! I fight my demons daily, raised by a single mom who married 3 times. (Yes all of them were jerks until she met my step dad who is wonderful). but i struggled with my own marriage for 16 years, many times people said “why don’t you get a divorce” be true to yourself. That is when that little voice said “No” what does God say about marriage. Our home life can’t be decided by the truth’s of our society’s. All society’s from the begginning have been corrupted. The world shows us what the truth can be, Jesus shows us what truth is and then shows us how to live. BUT IT AINT EASY.

More and more I am finding that it is so true that Let God be true and every man a liar. Lies come in many packages. It depends upon us as to which one we open. I think it will be many days before I open ANY packages again that happens to look good on the outside. But when I opened this one package, it really smelled like death if I didn’t throw it way. I threw it away and God caught it.

Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple and in three day I will rise it up.” But He was speaking of the temple of His body. So when He was raised from the dead, His desciples remembered that He said this; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.
- John 2:19, 21 and 22. He said it and it happened. And that’s the truth!!!

Truth is ; there is only,One Lord, One Faith, and One Baptism.
Once we see the Truth, We will Follow His commandment and be baptised in His Name; (Therefore), recieving His power from on high!
Without His name, We have no power here on earth.
The more we search out His Word, the more of Him, we recieve.
The closer we become more like Him. For, Jesus and His word are One!
In the being was the Word and the word was with God and the Word was God………!I would not serve a God I could not fill. Doors are open and Doors are closed,we decide which ones we will enter through. God , will use anyone and any situation ,to lead us down the right path to Him. Again, He gives us a choice, a free will; He doesn’t make anyone serve Him! When one door opens, another door will close for good, unless we do like Lots wife and turn around back to what we left behind. He created us in Their image and I want to be more like Him! Can anyone prove, that Jesus is not God? God is a spirit, and dwells in all who will recieve Him into their Hearts, mind and soul. , and is baptised in Jesus NAME;(Matthew 28:19, the last instructions of Jesus to His deciples) (fulfilled by Acts 2:38)They obeyed His instructon to the letter! Praise God for the Power of Having His name!

Truth is unchanging and immovable. It is the bedrock for reality. It is not a feeling. It is not a concept. it is not a philosophy. Without absolute truth, there is no reason, logic or meaning in the universe. Without absolute truth, we have no moral compass. Relativism leads to subjective integrity. What if stealing is ok in one person’s worldview, simply because they could justify it? What if they stole you car? Why would stealing be wrong if there are no moral absolutes? Jesus said “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me”. He is the ultimate source for truth and morality.
